We are happy to come talk to your medical school, practice or group about our journey. We are long past the anger of what this did to our lives. Instead, we would rather now ensure we both change laws and help others to ensure it doesn’t happen to them. Whether you are struggling because of a similar incident or you want to ensure your medical students or medical practice doesn’t repeat this cycle, contact us today. We are happy to visit in person, via Zoom or on the phone.
Today, doctors are supposed to self report anything: Lapses in their malpractice insurance, criminal offenses, DUI's, ANYTHING. Nurses and other medical professionals, they mess up once and they lose their license. Doctors? Not even a slap on the wrist.
In a world where you cannot walk in to any restaurant without a sanitation grade clearly posted, drive without insurance, buy a car without a CARFAX, WHY are doctors allowed to voluntarily chose if and when they will report anything? The system is broke and because of it, patients and families are being harmed, disfigured, permanently disabled and financially ruined.
Leah had a surgery performed April 24, 2009. We didn't ask the questions. He was uninsured and impaired. One week prior to Leah's surgery, her surgeon was involved in a one vehicle accident where his BAC was .38. Days later, the doctor was notified he would be having a hearing before the state podiatry board to review his license but despite this, he performed surgery anyway.
The doctor removed all the tissue between Leah's 3rd and 4th toe, claims he stitched the area up (surgical records prove different), put a stitch right through a blood vessel, never reached homeostasis, and he left.
Leah had internal bleeding for nearly two weeks and my wife and the wonderful Mother of four amazing daughters, now has a non curable nerve disorder called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, aka RSD. RSD is the rapid firing of nerves in an area normally caused by trauma, it is extremely painful, feels like your foot is on fire, and has no cure.
Due to his malpractice insurance lapsing and the hospital, Dignity Health, has successfully been able to defend against liability, this has left our family with millions of dollars in medical bills.
Despite this, our family has stuck together and battled through many setbacks. We want to ensure no other patient nor family has to experience the same.
